It’s been awhile since I’ve picked up a new book, having been really busy with running MFC. However, when I saw the movie trailer for Vampire Academy, I was intrigued and decided I needed to give VA a try. Boy, am I glad I did! I just finished Book 1 last night and I am already starting the next book!
Vampire Academy is about the trials and tribulations of two best friends – Rosemarie Hathaway, a dhampir and who is training to be a bodyguard for her Moroi best friend, Vasilisa “Lissa” Dragomir in St. Vladimir’s Academy. Two races of vampires walk this world – the Moroi, the “good” vampires who are alive and wield elemental magic, and the other, the Strigoi, “evil” undead who feed on the innocent to survive.
Rosemarie, or Rose as she is called in the book, is a smart, sassy character with lots of spunk and she is absolutely hilarious! Her comments, retorts and aptitude to violence really had me giggling in real life! It was worth reading this book just for her comments alone! Lissa, her best friend, is more quiet and subdued, partly because of her royalty status. However, that doesn’t make her less interesting. While Lissa seemingly has a pure and innocent soul, it is soon revealed that there is a darker side to her that might swallow her up.
The pace of the book was excellent in introducing the world of Strigoi, Moroi and their guardians. I find that it is always overwhelming, taking that first step into the world of a new fantasy series. How that world is revealed in the first book is of utmost importance. Richelle Mead, the author of Vampire Academy did really well in not overwhelming the reader in Book 1! I’ve bought all six books in the Vampire Academy series on Kindle and I highly suspect I will be glued to my Kindle for the next couple of weeks! Also, I am really excited to watch the VA movie now (in theatres 14 Feb) and see how it is translated to the big screen.
The entire Vampire Academy series is available on Kindle for $28.50. That’s a great deal, considering it’s about $6 per book individually!
P.S. If you are a fan of Vampire Academy too, you need to check out this VA school badge!
