Hello folks! I’m in North Carolina right now and the spirit of Halloween is absolutely all around! This is the first time that I’m celebrating Halloween in America (although I did get to carve pumpkins last year, but that was it). I’ve got a costume all ready for Halloween too – more pix later on! My theme for this year’s Halloween is Day of the Dead – flowers, sugar skulls and colourful patterns. Going with the theme, I made a Candy Skull Halloween pumpkin!
Here’s my inspiration: This totally rockin’ pumpkin!
When doing pumpkin shopping, I came across the most awesome white, orange veined pumpkin and decided that would be the perfect pumpkin for me. It was a tough one to carve though! Matt had to help me out after I got tired halfway. Here it is with all the holes cut out:
I then painted the insides of the cut-outs with black oil-based paint and also painted the mouth area black. After that, I glued candy corn and red M&Ms around the eyes, and white Chiclets for its teeth.
The whole project, from the carving to the painting and gluing took a good four hours. Matt got his evil looking green monster pumpkin carved out in less than two hours, and Mari got her spider-eye vampire done in about three. Here are their pumpkins:
Mine is definitely a Day (of the Dead!) pumpkin though – it looks awesome in the daytime and not so impressive at night. Their pumpkins, on the other hand, are the total opposite – they look awesome at night!
Looking at the pictures now, I think my pumpkin would look even better if it had a border outline around its eyes and nose! However, the oil-based paint was a pain in the ass. I had paint on my hands, arms, legs and T-shirt, and was basically getting paint on whatever I touched or bumped into =( I had to go shower and scrub myself immediately to make sure I didn’t leave black stains around the house! So… I think I will just leave my pumpkin as it is. I’m still pretty satisfied with it though! The most important thing was that we had fun and some bonding time doing pumpkin carving.
Next up will be Halloween costume dress-up time! Am super excited and can’t wait! =D
